The Queensland Infection Clinical Network was established in 2020 to provide expert clinical advice, direction and leadership to Queensland Health on infectious diseases, and infection prevention and control. The Queensland Infection Clinical Network is a multidisciplinary network with membership including clinicians, consumers and healthcare leaders in both public and private sectors, working together to improve and promote optimal care and outcomes for all Queenslanders.
The steering committee represents the broader membership and includes infectious diseases physicians, clinical microbiologists, infection control practitioners (adult and paediatric), Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) pharmacists, medical specialists working in rural and remote areas, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, general practice, and consumer representation. The steering committee have collective expertise in:
- Diagnosis and management of simple to complex, uncommon and/or chronic infections, in hospitalised adults and children.
- Prevention and control of healthcare-associated infection (HAI), including HAI surveillance.
- Antimicrobial stewardship – a system-wide approach to safe, effective and judicious antimicrobial prescribing.
- Prevention and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance in the community and hospitals
All decisions and activities undertaken by the Queensland Infection Clinical Network Steering Committee are aligned with best practice evidence and research, and through communication, collaboration and consensus with the broader network. The Queensland Infection Clinical Network Steering Committee is co-chaired by:
- Dr Naomi Runnegar, Infectious Diseases Physician and Clinical Microbiologist at Princess Alexandra Hospital
- Dr Sally Havers, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Infection Prevention & Control at Toowoomba Hospital
The role of the network
- Provide clinical expertise, direction and advice to the Department of Health, HHSs and other networks in service planning and emerging issues at the local, statewide and national levels
- Provide expertise, direction and advice to clinicians caring for patients considering both statewide and local issues
- Develop an open and supportive environment for clinicians and consumers
- Identify and drive initiatives to improve quality, safety and effectiveness in care delivery and access to services
- Ensure activity inclusively meets the needs of those for whom barriers to equitable access to healthcare exist

The Queensland Infection Clinical Network is collaboratively working and consulting with Department of Health stakeholders, Statewide, HHS and local level emergency response teams, Communicable Diseases Branch, and other Queensland Clinical Networks and craft groups.
