Managing the pain of opioids

Meeting dates: 19-20 July 2018

The renewed Senate membership was joined by key pain management stakeholders from around Queensland and beyond, including strong representation from consumers with lived experience, to explore ways to address the issues associated with increasing prescription opioid use. Attendees workshopped methods to ensure better usage of the high-risk medications used in pain management.

Meeting delegates supported Queensland Health implementing a nationally consistent pain management stewardship program that delivers multidisciplinary clinical governance, clinician education covering the broad spectrum of pain management options, methods to increase health literacy, improved sharing of pain management plans between a consumer’s care providers, all in an approach that analyses data to inform prescribing interventions.
