Improving kidney patient outcomes and kidney services in Central Queensland was the focus of a recent visit to Rockhampton Hospital by members of the Advancing Kidney Care (AKC2026) Project Delivery Team.
Rockhampton was the first of 17 sites to be visited by the team. Approximately 20 Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service (HHS) staff attended to learn how the activities of AKC2026 will support them to improve patient outcomes.

Clinical Lead Professor Kesh Baboolal said the sessions sought to engage the support of kidney services to contribute to a statewide mapping and gap analysis of specialist kidney care provision, and develop recommendations to bridge these gaps.
'So while we are sharing information about the project and where we are going, it’s really an opportunity for us to hear from kidney services about how they deliver care, their achievements and their challenges,' Professor Baboolal said.
'The roadshow will visit hospitals in Bundaberg, Toowoomba, Brisbane, Mt Isa, Cairns, Gold Coast, Townsville, Mackay, Logan, Ipswich, Princess Alexandra Hospital and the Sunshine Coast, and host videoconference sessions with the Central West and South West HHSs.'
The sessions will provide an update on the:
- Queensland Health framework for delivering quality care to patients with kidney disease
- development of a statewide kidney care data source
- development of an alternative kidney care funding model.
