Aim

To detect sight-threatening disease in earlier stages of Diabetic Retinopathy

Benefits

ROOM enables the early detection and treatment of diabetic retinopathy in rural areas where access to screening is an issue.

Background

Diabetic retinopathy is among the most common causes of vison loss in the working age population.  Early and regular screening to detect diabetic retinopathy and associated conditions has been demonstrated to reduce significant vision loss and disability.

Solutions Implemented

Eye Screening with a hand held camera that takes picture of the patient’s retina will be undertaken in a patient’s home town.  The pictures are then reviewed by a specialist using a store and forward method of telehealth.
