Summary

The Digitally Integrated Stroke Care (DISC) Project will address current barriers to the capture and use of quality data in the Integrated Electronic Medical Record (ieMR), by enhancing the application to reduce the data entry burden on clinical staff, and integrate data capture with clinical workflow processes.

Clinical stakeholders working in the digital hospital environment were consulted, and a Business Requirements Specification developed. From this, several component solutions have been identified. Currently the two priority ieMR enhancements have been drafted into technical enhancement specifications and provided to technical development resources. It is expected that the first solutions will be developed, tested and implemented by the end of 2017-2018 financial year.

Clinical Excellence Queensland’s Healthcare Innovation and Transformation Excellence Collaboration (HITEC) is coordinating the project on behalf of the Statewide Stroke Clinical Network.

Aim

  • Enable clinicians to more easily view stroke related information in the ieMR;
  • Automate the collection of stroke-related data during routine clinical note entry, and automate the retrieval and integration of supplementary data from existing electronic sources into the ieMR application; and
  • Standardise data elements and sets to be able to report and analyse clinical data.

Benefits

Clinical care delivery can be enhanced by allowing clinicians to more easily view stroke-related information about each patient. Automating data collection and integrating the capture into workflows reduces duplication and provides efficiency, freeing up clinical time for patient care. Standardising data elements and sets allows the data to be used more effectively for clinical service improvement.

Background

The Statewide Stroke Clinical Network supports clinical quality improvement based on data collection and analysis, and this use of clinical intelligence has been associated with measurable improvements in performance across Queensland. The introduction of the ieMR provided an opportunity to standardise data capture and integrate with clinical workflows, reducing the data collection burden on clinical staff, and increasing the quality of data captured.
