Aminoglycoside Desktop Calculator App

The prescribing of some high risk antibiotics, such as aminoglycosides, is complicated. If not dosed correctly (i.e. calculated specifically for each patient), the patient can experience serious adverse effects.

In a joint initiative, the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service’s Antimicrobial Stewardship team and ICT Software Development team, developed a desktop app to help mitigate the risks of dosing of high risk antimicrobials. The app is user friendly and accessible to all clinicians in the health service, ensuring safe and accurate dosing recommendations tailored to each patient. Used more than 2,000 times, the app is ensuring appropriate use of aminoglycosides; providing reassurance for clinicians that they are dosing appropriately and ultimately avoiding unintended harms.
