2020 Year of the nurse and midwife

About

2020 has been designated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. Nurses and midwives make up approximately 60 per cent of the Queensland Health clinical workforce and it is this year we wholeheartedly celebrate and thank our 43,462 nurses and midwives for their amazing contribution.

The year coincides with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) will lead international celebrations. The department will work with HHSs to celebrate the year through a series of events across the State to highlight and celebrate the work of nurses and midwives throughout the year 2020.

Midwives and nurses are with you at every step of life they see you into the world and care for you as you leave it, helping you to stay healthy and support you if you are sick.

Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale was a compassionate nurse, devoting herself to caring for and treating the poor and suffering. She significantly contributed towards the development of nursing as a profession. Today, every year on her birthday International Nurses Day is celebrated.
