Where can midwifery take you?

Queensland offers a range of exciting employment opportunities for midwives from busy, complex tertiary hospitals, to small rural and remote facilities that offer the best in one-to-one care.

Midwifery in Australia is recognised in legislation as a separate profession to nursing. A number of universities offer a combined nursing and midwifery four-year dual degree, or prospective students who see their career specifically as a midwife may like to consider the Bachelor of Midwifery, which is a three-year fulltime degree program. After university education, midwives are registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) to practice in any Australian state or territory.

Ongoing competency and professional development applies to the full midwifery scope of practice – pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care to women, infants and their family.
