Queensland's Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer Shelley Nowlan has extended her congratulations to Gold Coast Professor Jennifer Fenwick (pictured), announced as the lead researcher in Australia in the areas of pregnancy and birth. Prof Fenwick is Professor of Midwifery and Clinical Chair at the Gold Coast University Hospital.

The Australian newspaper released a list of the nation's top researchers, stating that health and medical research was an 'area of strength' for Australian universities where many institutions did well.

Shelley said the announcement was formal recognition of Prof Fenwick's enormous contribution to research and best practice maternity care. "Her work helps showcase midwives globally as being the key primary health providers to women during pregnancy, throughout labour and birth and into the early parenting period."

"I would also like to personally thank Prof Fenwick for her dedication to scholarship and her application of skills in practice. Jennifer provides continuity of care to women at the GCUH, educates staff and students at Griffith University and as we have seen, generates leading research reports to inform and reform maternity care.
