On Monday 23 April 2018, 130 anaesthetists, surgeons, general physicians, geriatricians, perioperative nurses, elective surgery coordinators and stakeholders met at the State Library of Queensland for the annual Statewide Anaesthesia and Perioperative Care Clinical Network (SWAPNet) Forum.
The forum provided the SWAPNet Steering Committee with an opportunity to present their 2017-18 Annual Activity Statement and showcase several major projects such as the Pre-anaesthetic Evaluation Framework, Anaesthetic Benchmarking System – Obstetrics, Quality Focused Interventions for the Relief of Symptoms Team (QFIRST), Rural Perioperative Team Training Program and the recently published Consent for Anaesthesia and patient information sheets.
Professor Keith McNeil, Assistant Deputy-Director-General, Clinical Excellence Division and Chief Clinical Information Officer provided a departmental address and later spoke about ‘unleashing the benefits of data ... delivering the digital dream’ and Professor David Story, Foundation Chair of Anaesthesia, University of Melbourne presented the Victorian Perioperative Surgical Home which harnesses new models of care and innovative approaches to achieve value driven outcomes and a more proactive, patient-centred, evidence based, coordinated, team based approach to perioperative care.
The afternoon session, facilitated by Dr Sarah Dalton, Clinical Lead, NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation included several local and interstate speakers, providing insight into the issues associated with managing older persons presenting for surgery including risk mitigation, frailty and risk assessment, collaborative co-management and variation.
The forum concluded with a multidisciplinary workshop to identify strategies to improve the management of older ‘high risk’ patients within the perioperative environment. The workshop outcomes will be tabled at the SWAPNet Steering Committee planning meeting on Friday 25 May 2018 and evolve into a suite of potential projects and multidisciplinary collaborations over the next 12 to 24 months.
