Emergency physicians from across the state came together on August 31 to discuss challenges and opportunities regarding the care of children in emergency departments (EDs). This is the first time a dedicated forum was held specifically on the care of children and generated significant interest.
Participants at the invitation-only event explored current the current state and challenges facing Queensland paediatric and mixed EDs, and identified some key short, medium and long-term priorities. These priorities included themes around a skilled and flexible workforce, information resources and infrastructure, and patient flow and system performance.
The newly appointed Clinical Co-chairs of the ED Care of Children’s Working Group, Dr Fiona Thomson and Mr Travis Cole, will now ensure that the recommendations from the day are addressed as part of the Emergency Department Care of Children Project hosted by Children’s Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service.
