Healthcare Improvement Unit

The Healthcare Improvement Unit (HIU) works collaboratively with Hospital and Health Services (HHSs) to explore and implement new and innovative models of care which improve access to healthcare.

HIU is also responsible for funding and evaluating new treatments and technologies for possible statewide implementation. We also work closely and collaboratively with clinicians and health service managers to improve the capacity and efficiency of public hospitals in Queensland.

Supported by these collaborative alliances, HIU assists local services to secure funding, develop policy and promote the implementation of effective strategies which enable better outcomes to be delivered for local communities.

HIU also leads clinical engagement on behalf of the Department of Health through its clinical networks and the Queensland Clinical Senate.

Our teams

Clinical service improvement

The clinical service improvement program drives improvements and efficiencies to surgical and outpatients access management across Queensland’s public hospitals. It also works collaboratively with HHSs to improve emergency department and inpatient access through improved performance and planning.

This program has responsibility for evaluating and providing strategic direction on integrating care programs, assessing, evaluating and diffusing clinical health technology and leading clinical improvement education and facilitation.

Clinician engagement

The clinician engagement program is the conduit for the Clinical Senate and Clinical Networks to engage with the Department of Health and HHSs. This program provides administrative support and coordination to the networks and senate and has responsibility for developing and reviewing Clinical Pathways and implementing the End-of-Life Care strategy.

This program also leads the implementation of and support for Queensland Health’s strategic plan for Telehealth.

Healthcare systems and informatics services

This program leads clinical quality improvement in the digital environment on behalf of the Department of Health and HHSs. It also leads healthcare reporting and analysis and drives whole-of-system data efficiencies through the development, implementation and support of information systems and informatics projects.

Consultancy service

HIU’s consultancy service program performs clinical service reviews and can deploy a rapid response service for system performance improvement. This program also provides performance engineering, with recommendations following clinical service review driven by and informed by data.
